Our workshop process for KITIMAT started on December 1st when I began working with the Chorus, developing a movement vocabulary, allowing them to connect the audience with the major events and issues in the play.
On December 2nd we read through the script with the entire cast and talked with playwright Elaine Avila about her connection to the stories she chose to tell in this play.
December 3rd, 4th, and 6th we worked with staging the reading. Not only did we go from Draft 6 to Draft 8 of the play in just two days, but with 13 cast members, and a flurry of music stands, there was a lot to choreograph in such a short amount of time!
We had public presentations on December 7-9 for the Pomona College Theatre and Dance faculty, staff, and subscribers, as well as for the Claremont Colleges community. The post-show conversations with the audience provided a wonderful amount of insight into the process for us all. Elaine is currently working on Draft 9 of KITIMAT. Auditions for the Spring production will be held on January 23/24 at Pomona College.
